Are you working from home due to self imposed quarantine? We know that working from home is a luxury, especially right now. But just because you can work from home doesn’t mean you know how to work from home. There are soo many distractions, the comfy bed, the laundry pile, the dog that needs a walk and so on. As freelancers we thought that we might give you some tips and tricks on how to be more productive in the comfort of your own home.
Set up a dedicated workspace
Working from the sofa or bed can be really tempting, but let’s be realistic. A dedicated workspace make you feel more like “going to the office”, it is officially work time. This could be a spare bedroom that you convert to a home office or just a nook where you can set up a desk for your computer and office supplies.
Invest in a Comfy chair
Spending many years working from kitchen chairs, sofas and everything in between, trust us on this. You need to invest in a comfortable office chair! Not only will your body thank you, you will work more effective not having to spend time reposition yourself every five minutes. You don’t have to go with the top of the line, places like IKEA offers affordable, stylish chairs. Or why not buy a premium office chair second hand.
Plants make a great addition to your workspace! Put your favourite plant on the desk to boost your creativity, or why don’t you make your office in to a secret garden. Other benefits are that plants produce oxygen and cleans the air.
It's all in the details
Now when you have your dedicated desk, comfy chair and plant, let the fun begin. It’s time to add some personal touches. A nice jar for your pens, a stand for your headphones, just go for it. It might seem like an unnecessary step, but trust us on this — it is much easier to actually use your workspace if it’s a place that brightens your workday.
Set real work hours
Now that you have your work area set up, it’s time to get down to business — literally. If you are going to make working from home an everyday commitment, then set specific work hours. The beauty of working from home is that you can be flexible in setting your own hours. For example, if you know that you are most productive in the morning and in the evening, or if you need to walk the dog, get some exercise and so on, then you may want to set your work hours in blocks according to that. It’s all about discover your high productivity periods. Just make sure that you can distance yourself from work when you are done for the day, you don’t want to work nonstop.
Don’t Work in Your PJs
We know — this is one reason why people love working from home. If you enjoy working in your PJs, then you are killing your productivity. Beyond psychologically getting you in the right mindset for work, you’ll be ready to handle any kind of video chat with a teammate or client. You’ll be prepared to get work done, and you will be mentally and physically prepared for the day. That doesn’t mean you have to get dressed in your ordinary office outfit, just change into something comfy and decent that you actually feel that you can leave the house wearing.
